DRD Audio/Visual can transfer many film or video tape formats, audio tape, vinyl records and photographic slides and negatives to digital format. Audio tape such as Reel-to-Reel, Cassette and 8-track tape may also be archived to digital formats for preservation of the material. Home movie or personally produced "home videos" only - no commercially produced material that has copy code protection embedded within it can be converted.
Our video conversion studio is located in Fort Fairfield, Maine. Your tapes, film or slides are not sent away to be processed by a third-party.
Using a Graflex16 Model 920 projector we can capture 16mm film and its accompanying audio track, if audio was encoded, via a direct line input so no projector noise is heard in the final transfer.
16mm movie film which has an optical audio track encoded on it will have two very thin dark strips running on the side opposite the sprocket holes. These strips vary in thickness according to the audio frequency encoded on that section of the film (see photo at left). If there is only one strip that has fluctuating thickness, it is a mono recording. If there are two strips fluctuating in thickness it is a stereo recording. On the movie projector, a powerful light bulb, called an “exciter” bulb is cast down a narrow tunnel toward the film strip. In line with that light tunnel, on the bottom side of the film is a playback head that has a photoelectric cell which creates a fluctuating voltage as more or less light is passed through the audio track of the film. This fluctuating voltage represents an electrical version of the optical audio waveform and is then further amplified to produce the audio from the film’s sound track.

All format of slides supported. Price to convert is 20 cents per slide. Slides are converted to .jpg format which can be played on all computers and most flat screen televsions. CD-ROM or Thumb drive storage options available.
For smaller jobs DVD format is the best choice. A DVD will hold up to 3 hours of material. DVDS are $10.00 each, in addition to the transfer service fee. An appropriately sized USB Thumb drive is also an option and is a good choice for larger projects of more than six hours in video length. Thumb drive files will be in the H.264/mp4 video format which is universal across all devices and modern day televisions with a USB input. A thumb drive with collectible case is $15.00.
CD is available for the audio tape transfers. A CD will hold around 70 minutes of material. One CD is included in the pricing for audio tape transfers above. Additional CDs are $10.00 each.
DVD or CD comes with case as shown in picture with custom cover and index sheet.
